(Port) Wine of the month January 2019: Fonseca Vintage Port 1948
One of the "all-time-classic" Vintage Ports and harder to get every month. The Vintage 1948 was the focus of our traditional "year's-end-lunch" in London. Breathtaking Ports, incredible young and vivid - the younger brother of 1927 (our last year's topic). Primus inter pares was Fonseca, closely followed by Graham, Sandeman and Martinez.
Deep red color with almost no rim. Malt, violets, honey and floral notes in the bouquet. Complex and fresh(!) palate with an almost unbelievable length. Malt, coffee, toffee and tobacco with perfectly supporting acidity and fully integrated tannins. Extremely long, multi-layered aftertaste. One for the ages. 20/20
